During the 70´s Cancún hailed a tourism success, subsequently initiating the growth of tourism for Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and the Riviera Maya in the past 10 years.
Given the population and hotel growth of this region in Mexico, it is hard to compare it with other tourism destinations of the world. However the impact of this growth has proven the need to develop international standards in services such as golf and has resulted in the creation of groups and associations.
Of which, one is the Asociación de Campos de Golf del Caribe Mexicano, A.C (Association of golf courses in the Mexican Caribbean), created in November of 2004 to promote this region as a premier golf destination. They join together the professional golf courses of this region to promote themselves as world class so the Mayan Riviera will be recognized all over the world as the best golf destination in Mexico. It is theire goal to represent a total of 22 golf courses by the year 2010.
The founders of this associationare: Akira Dominaga (Moon Palace), Guillermo Sifel (La Roca Country Club), Lis Melo (Mayan Place) y Julio Viscontti (Hilton).
The characteristics that define a golf couse with the rating of excellence are:
- The dimensions must be between 35-50 hectares.
- The designer must be someone renowned in the golf industry.
- The services provide must meet the excellence standards.

El Camaleón, Maya Coba/Greg Norman
